Jan Molby criticizes England international

Liverpool legend Jan Molby has claimed that Liverpool are a better side without Daniel Sturridge.

The ex-Red has said that Monday’s night bore-draw with Manchester United was proof that Sturridge is far from his best at the moment, as he possessed very little movement, sharpness, and attacking threat.

He was eventually replaced by Adam Lallana after an hour, and as a result, Liverpool appeared more dangerous.

Since moving to Liverpool from Chelsea in 2013, the England striker has been ruled out of action on 21 separate occasions, meaning that he has only made 99 appearances for the Reds.

Molby believes that Sturridge’s injury woes are finally taking their toll on his performances.

Writing in his Liverpool Echo column, he said: “Lallana replaced Daniel Sturridge who I do have some worries about. If you were told a few years ago that Daniel Sturridge would have this kind of drought you wouldn’t have believed it – but it is happeneing.

“Coming back injury after injury takes its toll and I think that’s what we’re seeing here now.

“The best he ever played for Liverpool was when he was playing second fiddle to Luis Suarez and he took his positions from the way that Luis played.

“On Monday I think he just struggled a little bit with his positional play, ‘where do I need to be?’, ‘how many runs do I need to make to take defenders away?’ but also ‘I want to stay central because I want to be there if there’s a chance created’.

“He’s just struggling a little bit with his game at the moment and the only cure for that is goals. That’s what you live and breathe as a goalscorer.

“He just needs to physically go through scoring goals again, take the pressure off because people are looking at Liverpool at their best at the moment and it doesn’t involve Daniel Sturridge.”
