Chelsea will join the race for midfielder this summer

Liverpool have suffered a set back in their pursuit of Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Gotze, with Chelsea keen on signing the Germany international.

It is no secret that the Reds are keen to bring in the World Cup winner during the summer transfer window, as they look to bolster their midfield options, and with Jurgen Klopp keen to reunite with the former Borussia Dortmund star.

Klopp and Gotze worked together at Dortmund, before the midfielder left for the Allianz Arena in 2013. And with Bayern set to let go of the German this summer, numerous clubs have made their interest known.

However, the Blues are reportedly set to offer ÂŁ35 million for Gotze, which would allow Bayern to break even on the amount they recently paid to bring in Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches.

Gotze has been struck by injury this campaign, and has made just 20 appearances for the Bavarians, scoring four times in the process.

But Liverpool are hoping that Klopp can lure the German to Anfield, and reignite the partnership that proved so fruitful at the Westfalenstadion. However, they will have to hope that playing under Klopp is a bigger lure than Chelsea, who will not being playing in Europe next season.

Carlo Ancelotti, who is to take over from Bayern boss Pep Guardiola in the summer, tipped his former club off that Gotze is not in his plans, and the Blues are now ready to pursue a deal for the player.

It is understood that Chelsea have already opened talks with the player’s representatives, while London rivals Arsenal are also understood to be interested in Gotze, with Arsene Wenger set to overall his squad this summer, after a poor campaign.
