Plymouth could hold their heads up high, but it’s Liverpool who are through to the next round of the FA Cup.
A brave fight from Plymouth wasn’t quite enough in the third-round replay, as Jurgen Klopp’s side go through to the next round.
The home road gave their side a heroic reception at full time, and each man was clapped as they left the field, Plymouth have made around 1m from the two games against Liverpool, which in League Two terms, is huge.
Plymouth can be proud of how they performed on both occasions- but Jurgen Klopp also was brave in his selection of many young players in the replay, which ultimately was enough to edge Liverpool through.
It was Lucas Leiva’s header in the 18th minute that secured the victory, after he was left unmarked following a Coutinho corner.
Origi missed a chance for Liverpool early on from the penalty spot, as he was denied by Plymouth keeper McCormick – and Plymouth tested Liverpool, including a shot that hit the post from Jervis.
Lucas’ goal was his first in almost seven years, as Jurgen Klopp’s side made the 293-mile trip to Home Park worth it.
It could be argued that the win should have been more comfortable for the Reds, but Plymouth, who are 66 places below Liverpool in the football pyramid were not overawed by such big opposition.
Plymouth came closest to equalising when Jake Jervis struck the post with a scissor kick midway through the second half.
Liverpool will now play Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers on the 28th of January, and will be hoping for another game where they have 68% of the ball like they did this time out.
The reds also registered 16 shots on goal compared to Plymouths 5, but also committed 17 fouls – compared to Plymouths 12.
An overall dominant display from Liverpool, who will feel they could have got more from the game, but a win is a win – and Liverpool march on in the FA Cup.
