Liverpool are ready to offer former Tottenham defender Steven Caulker a way out of Cardiff if the Bluebirds fail to avoid the drop this season. Caulker has been in impressive form for Cardiff so far after an £8.5m move in the summer and he has been rewarded with a call up to Roy Hodgson’s 30-man England squad to face Denmark this week.
However, the player’s efforts may not be enough to keep the Bluebirds in the Premier League and reports are suggesting Liverpool will swoop for Caulker in the summer should the Welsh side get relegated. Brendan Rodgers has spent a season working with the defender before when he signed him on loan at his time with Swansea and he is convinced that Caulker is the answer to some of Liverpool’s defensive problems.
Kolo Toure has failed to live up to expectations at Anfield, while the normally reliable pairing of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel have both had shaky moments of their own these past few weeks. Mamadou Sakho has missed Liverpool’s last eight games through injury but he is closing in on a return and Tiago Ilori is on loan at Spanish side Granada.
And while Roy Hodgson says Caulker is unlikely to make the plane to Brazil, Rodgers is convinced there is a role for the player at Anfield.
