Liverpool are the latest Premier League club to be embroiled in the race to sign FC Porto midfielder Fernando, with a host of clubs chasing the highly rated midfield general.

The Brazilian was rumoured to be on the verge of completing a transfer to Serie A giants Napoli, having been linked with several sides on the continent.

However, it appears that Fernando would prefer a move to England, with a whole host of clubs fighting for his signature.

Reports in Portugal suggest that the Reds had scouts present for Porto’s match against Benfica on Sunday and that Fernando was being watched.

Fernando current deal is set to expire in the Summer, but Liverpool may need to snap him up quick, with Fernando’s agent stating that he is on the verge of signing a new deal with the Portuguese giants.

Araujo said: “We’ve come to an agreement with Porto.

“The only thing that is missing are the details. Once they’re agreed we’ll sign.”

It is possible that Araujo’s statement is purely a tactic to encourage teams to step up their interest in Fernando, and even if true, a new contract would not necessarily preclude a move.

Fernando has impressed in the centre of midfield this season, as Porto look to win the League , with a three way tussle between Sporing Lisbon and Benfica at the top.

Premier League sides Everton Tottenham and Manchester City are all interested in the defensive midfielder.
