The Irishman is a shock target for Klopp

Liverpool could sign Southampton centre forward Shane Long for £8 million, as the Saints’ Chairman Ralph Krueger refuses to rule out any outgoings this month.

The South-coast side today confirmed the £4 million signing of Charlie Austin from Queens Park Rangers on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

However, Austin may be Long’s replacement rather than his partner. It is believed that the Merseyside giants’ manager Jurgen Klopp wants to bring the Republic of Ireland international to Anfield.

Long already has eight goals in 19 appearances so far this season.

‘I would never say never’

“I think that players coming in and out here in the last two weeks is not in the plan,” said Krueger.

“I would never say never on either direction because it’s the nature of the sport, you don’t know what opportunities present themselves.”

“At the moment we are pleased with the depth and Ronald has shown that we have different looks and even I, with my limited football experience, understand we have different line-ups and looks and it’s difficult to prepare against us,” he added.

“Ideal would be to keep all those names in the line-up.”
