Brendan Rodgers has identified five players as part of his summer rebuilding job

The Northern Irishman wants a major overhaul so that the Reds are serious title contenders next season.

Rodgers is believed to lining up moves for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, Manchester City midfielder James Milner and Burnley forward Danny Ings.

England international Nathaniel Clyne is also a key transfer target – Liverpool have already had a £10m bid rejected – they have been encouraged to come back with a revised offer.

Liverpool are also chasing Benfica midfielder, Nicolas Gaitan but are not the only club interested as Manchester United are also admirers, according to the Daily Mirror.

United manager Louis Van Gaal has already landed Dutch midfielder Memphis Depay ahead of Liverpool and he could be about to snatch Gaitan as well for a reported £25million.

Belgian international, Christian Benteke will be allowed to leave Aston Villa if his release clause is met – thought be around £32.5m – according to manager Tim Sherwood.

Benteke, 24, has 13 goals in 29 games for Villa this campaign, including the equalizer that eventually lead to Liverpool being knocked out of the FA Cup semi-final.

James Milner is reported to be interested in a move to Liverpool after stalling over a new deal at Manchester City because of a lack of opportunities under Manuel Pellegrini.

Finally, Burnley striker Danny Ings – who has scored more goals than all of Liverpool’s four strikers combined this season – will likely command a £8m tribunal fee.
