Reds were close to signing on Deadline Day

Liverpool pulled out of a deal to sign Marseille midfielder Mario Lemina, according to reports this morning.

The Reds were in the market for a new central-midfielder, with Lucas Leiva expected to leave the club and head to the Super Lig with Besiktas.

However, that deal broke down at the last minute and that then prevented Brendan Rodgers from signing Lemina.

Lemina Move

The 22-year-old did eventually get a move on Deadline Day however as he completed a season-long loan to Serie A champions Juventus, who now have an option to buy at the end of the season.

With that clause in place, it looks like Rodgers has missed out on the chance to sign the Gabon international.

Lucas is expected to leave Merseyside sooner rather than later, and despite the wealth of options for Rodgers already in the centre of the park, it’s reported that he wants to sign someone as a replacement anyway.
