Liverpool should sign Barkley claims Carragher

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Ross Barkley would be the perfect replacement for Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard, when he departs at the end of the season.

Gerrard announced on Thursday that when his current deal expires at the end of the campaign he will leave the club with which he spent his entire career. The former England international will leave a gaping hole in the Reds midfield, and his former team-mate Carragher believes Rodgers should snap up Barkley from local rivals Everton to replace the Anfield legend.

Barkley burst onto the scene at Goodison Park just last season, and has continued his fine form of last season, during which time he scored six goals in 34 league appearances, into this term. He has sparked interest from major European clubs, but it is the Toffees’ local rivals that should sign him up in the eyes of former Reds defender Carragher.

The Sky Sports pundit tweeted “Enough of Gerrard now he’s leaving, [his] replacement has to be Ross Barkley.”

Whilst Carragher claimed ÂŁ10 million should seal the deal for the 21 year-old, it is likely it would take much more to prise their rivals of their most prized asset.
