Teun Koopmeiners’ desire to secure a transfer has escalated into a full-blown standoff with Atalanta.
The Dutch midfielder skipped training, a move that has left the club feeling “blackmailed,” according to head coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
Koopmeiners, who played a pivotal role in Atalanta’s Europa League triumph last season, has been heavily linked with a £45 million move.
Liverpool emerged as a strong contender for his signature, with new manager Arne Slot reportedly keen to bring the versatile midfielder to Anfield.
However, it’s Juventus who have taken the lead in the race for Koopmeiners. Gasperini, speaking to local media, revealed that the player has already agreed on personal terms with the Turin giants, leaving Atalanta in a precarious position.
“The situation was under control until last week,” Gasperini admitted.
“But now, Teun has decided he wants to join Juventus. He’s stressed and refuses to train or play with us.”
The coach’s frustration was palpable, as he lamented the unexpected turn of events.
“This feels like a form of blackmail. It’s not the usual way we handle transfers here,” Gasperini added, hinting at the disruption Koopmeiners’ actions have caused within the squad.
“I’m ready for the new season, but this situation complicates everything.”
Liverpool, meanwhile, continue to monitor the situation closely. While Koopmeiners’ future seems increasingly likely to lie in Serie A with Juventus, the Reds are also reportedly eyeing Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi as an alternative midfield target.
