The midfielder, who left Merseyside in 2009, had been expected to quit the Spanish giants either in January or when his contract expires at the end of the season.
But newspaper Marca are now reporting the 32-year-old has instructed his agent to negotiate a new deal with Carlo Ancelotti’s men.
Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United have all been linked with the Spain international, who would be available on a free transfer in the summer.
