Liverpool City Council have announced they have given Liverpool Football Club permission to go ahead with their proposed £75million rejuvenation of Anfield.

Most of the intended work will be focused on the current ‘Main Stand’ which will have an extra 8,300 seats, with the Anfield Road Stand increasing by 4,800, taking the overall capacity up to 53,500.

The proposed expansion is just one element of a major regeneration plan, which was announced by Liverpool City Council in October 2012, to transform the Anfield area.

Construction work is expected to start in the early months of next year and be completed in time for the 2016/17 season.

LFC’s chief executive officer, Ian Ayre, said: ‘Today’s approval by the Planning Committee is another step on our journey which we embarked on nearly two years ago.’

He continued: ‘We received very positive support for our proposals during a public consultation exercise earlier this year and whilst we are delighted about the progress made today, there are still some steps that we need to navigate through in order to give us the certainty that we need to proceed with our expansion plans.’

The proposals also include conference and banqueting facilities, a new club shop and additional car parking.
