Liverpool have made signing a new right-back a priority. Conjecture over Glen Johnson’s Anfield longevity is never far from the news, and it seems likely he may be moved on to Roma sooner rather than later.
Nathaniel Clyne has impressed for club and country this season, and Liverpool have been keeping tabs on the 23-year-old.
Southampton are keen to keep their man, and with the Saints starting the season so well, they may well be able to convince him to stay. However the lure of playing at Anfield, and possible Champions League football may be enough for Clyne to move to the North West of England.
Formerly a Crystal Palace star, and playing 139 games for the South Londoners, Clyne’s progress up the footballing ladder has been impressive. He was originally discovered on a recreation ground in Brixton by a volunteer organisation, Afewee Academy. At 10-years-old he was trialled at Arsenal, but they sent him away, citing he was too small. He has certainly grown up now.
With Liverpool already snapping up Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, and Rickie lambert from the Saints this year, we think the Reds must have a scout based down on the south coast. There is also much Anfield interest in Jay Rodriguez, and so it is plausible that Liverpool could have signed FIVE Southampton players in less than a year not long after Santa has packed away his slay, fed the reindeer, and is planning his summer holidays.
