Compensation fee has to be agreed by both clubs

Liverpool have been told to cough up £8million for new-Summer signing Danny Ings.

The former-Burnley striker left Turf Moor on a free transfer after his contract expired at the club, and it was announced yesterday that he had agreed to join Premier League side Liverpool.

However, The Reds are still going to have to pay a fee to the recently-relegated side because of Ings‘ age.

Compensation Fee

Due to the striker being under the age of 24, Liverpool will have to pay a compensation fee for the deal, a rule that was put into place so that clubs don’t regularly lose their top, young talents on a regular basis.

Brendan Rodgers and co. was hoping that the fee would only be around £5m, but it looks like Burnley are holding out for around £8m, which would make Ings one of the most expensive compensation fees in football.

With Burnley wanting £8m and Liverpool saying £5m, the saga could go to a tribunal if the two parties can’t agree on a fee, and an independent panel will then decide on the compensation package.

The ball is thought to be in Burnley’s court because they snubbed an offer from Tottenham Hotspur worth around £12m, which means they can ask for a higher compensation fee.

Burnley Statement

A spokesperson from Turf Moor has said: “We rejected an offer made by Liverpool but will continue to have dialogue with the club in order to reach a resolution over the fee.”

The 22-year-old striker netted 11 times in the Premier League last season, but his efforts were not enough to keep Sean Dyche‘s side in the top-flight as they ended the campaign 19th and suffered an immediate return to the Championship.

Ings is Liverpool’s second Summer signing after they secured James Milner on a free after he chose to leave Manchester City.
