Liverpool vs Everton Preview

Buildup to the Merseyside derby on Wednesday night. It’s quite possibly the least hyped Merseyside Derby ever. While remaining an ever present important fixture in terms of city-pride and bragging rights, this game is of very little significance to both teams in the league this time around.

The truth is, while still a big game, both teams have bigger fish to fry in other competitions, and while a win would be nice here, both sides, especially Everton with theirs on Saturday, will have their eyes on their upcoming semi finals. It was clear that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was looking ahead to this game at the weekend, when he fielded what was clearly a weakened starting XI vs Bournemouth in Sunday’s 2-1 win. Everton have had an extra day to recover, but Roberto Martinez faces a few tough choices as he must have the FA Cup semi with Manchester United on Saturday in his sights, the likes of Kevin Mirallas, Gerard Deulofeu and John Stones all played in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Southampton.

Liverpool vs Everton Team News

Liverpool have a date with Villareal in their Europa League semi final 1st leg next Thursday, and already are missing Jordan Henderson and Emre Can through injury, so Klopp will be wary of losing any more players. That being said, I do think that he will be playing his strongest available side, as he heads into his first derby looking for a win.

The 1-1 draw between these two sides at Goodison proved to be Brendan Rodgers’ last game in charge of Liverpool, so Klopp is yet to experience such a passionate game in front of the Anfield faithful. Everton fans are growing more and more impatient towards Roberto Martinez, who is struggling to get good results and good performances. Maybe anything less than a win here and a win on Saturday will see him follow the same fate as Rodgers following the last derby.

It has been, overall, a poor season for both sides in the league. Everton have only won 3 home games all season, and while they’ve only lost 2 away games, haven’t been able to put together a good run of wins over the last few months.

Liverpool vs Everton Predictions

There’s a lot to predict here, I don’t know what type of game it’s going to be. Last year’s derby at Anfield was a boring 0-0 that I can barely even remember, but Liverpool are on a role at the moment, so this time I can see there being a few goals.

Liverpool vs Everton predicted line ups

Let’s start with the starting XI predictions.

LIVERPOOL predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Mignolet, Clyne, Lovren, Sakho, Flanagan (c), Lucas, Allen, Firmino, Lallana, Coutinho, Origi

EVERTON predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Joel, Hibbert, Stones, Funes Mori, Baines, Barry, McCarthy, Deulofeu, Barkley, Mirallas, Lukaku

Injuries include Jordan Henderson and Emre Can for Liverpool, and Tom Cleverley and Seamus Coleman for Everton. In terms of goals, I think Liverpool may get themselves ahead pretty early on and grab complete control of the game. It won’t a whitewash, but I think Liverpool could, and will, win this very comfortably.
