Losing Fabregas hurt more than Van Persie, says Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that when the club lost Cesc Fabregas to FC Barcelona, it affected the side a lot more than when they lost Robin Van Persie to Manchester United.

The Gunners boss was asked about the two former-captains because Jack Wilshere gave an interview earlier on in the week claiming that losing Fabregas was a bigger loss than losing Van Persie.

The English midfielder admitted that he was disappointed and upset when he heard the news that the Spaniard had joined his boyhood club of Barca.

In his press conference ahead of this weekend’s clash with Cardiff City, Wenger was asked about the comments and he admitted that losing Fabregas was a lot harder.

“It is always difficult to say or prove more or less. We lost two great players, one was an exceptional striker, the other an exceptional midfielder. Where Jack is right is that it did hurt us twice and hit us twice in a very hard way because we struggled [afterwards], especially at the start of the season, and it took us time to come back.”

“This season is the first season [for a few years] where we did not lose a great player and is why as well we had the advantage of a better start. On top of that as well we bought a great player [Mesut Ozil], which helped even more.”
