Manchester United boss says goalkeeper doesn’t want to play

David De Gea doesn’t want to play for Manchester United, according to manager Louis Van Gaal.

The Dutchman has admitted that the goalkeeper isn’t in the right frame of mind to play competitive football, and that’s why he wasn’t in the match-day squad for the Tottenham Hotspur game last week.

However, the ‘keeper has now been excluded from the Aston Villa game this evening as well and Van Gaal revealed in his press conference that it’s because the Spaniard doesn’t want to play for United.

Speaking in his press conference, Van Gaal stated that he has a team of coaches that help him with decisions, and he admitted that De Gea was happy not to play against Spurs and Villa.

Van Gaal Reveals All

Van Gaal said: “We’ve talked with him and he was fully agreed with our decision. We have a goalkeeping coach, Frans Hoek, so I’m not doing everything alone.

“Frans had a meeting with David and he asked him, ‘Do you want to play?’ The answer was no.

“Then I have to take the decision. It is a process. We had been observing him in preparation, and he was not so good, he was not the same David De Gea as before, when he was my best player last season. According to the fans, he was the best player of the last two years.”

Van Gaal was then asked if De Gea would return to the first-team if he was mentally ready and if a move to Real Madrid collapsed.

The manager stated: “That depends on Sergio Romero and his form. It is always like that.”
