Left-back wasn’t happy sharing position with Cesar Azpilicueta

Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis has opened up about his failed move to Chelsea and he’s admitted that it came as a shock to him when he was forced to share his position with Cesar Azpilicueta.

The Brazilian swapped Atletico for Chelsea last summer, following in the footsteps of Diego Costa who completed the same move earlier in the summer.

However, unlike his team-mate, the left-back failed to get regular football and spent most of his time in West London on the sidelines.

Luis ended his short-term career at Stamford Bridge by returning to Atletico this summer and he’s admitted in a recent interview that he was shocked to find out he wasn’t guaranteed first-team football.

Lack of Action

“I always really missed Atletico,” he said. ‘I was coming to play 50 games or more and to have to share my position [with Azpilicueta] shocked me.

“It makes you less important but I made up for the games I missed with games for the Brazil team.

“It’s true I wasn’t as important at Chelsea. I never demanded that. What I wanted was to be a champion, because few people get that. I succeeded. But the happiness wasn’t there. It’s a significant difference.

“I talked to [Diego Simeone] a few times. He asked if I wanted to return and I told him I’d love to.”
