Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has been named Player of The Year by the Football Writers’ Association. The Uruguayan has managed to score 30 goals for the Reds so far this season and he has also weighed in with a number of assists.

The 27-year old took 52% of the vote with his team-mate Steven Gerrard in second and Man City’s Yaya Toure in third place. FWA Chairman Andy Dunn had this to say:

“Tireless endeavour allied to extraordinary imagination makes an irresistable combination. Add ingenious, impudent finishing and you have a footballer who truly quickens the pulse.”

Suarez will receive the award at a dinner in London on May 15th. More than 300 journalists cast their vote for the award which was first won by Stanley Matthews back in 1948.

On Sunday, boss Brendan Rodgers claimed the forward had been ‘outstanding in all my time here and obviously, in particular, this season.’ Suarez has managed to hit his 30 goals this season despite missing the first 6 games through suspension for biting Branislav Ivanovic and it seemed like he may have been leaving Anfield last summer.

But the Liverpool striker has since put pen to paper on a new four-and-a-half-year deal at Liverpool, which secures his future at the club.
