The midfielder beats Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah to win the award

Luka Modric has been named the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year for 2017-18, seeing off competition from Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah. The Croatia International received 313 points in the voting to finish ahead of three-time winner Ronaldo (223pts) and Salah came third (134pts).

“I would like to dedicate this to my coaches and my team-mates, ” He said as quoted by Goal.

“They are there in the good moments and also the not so good moments so this is for them.”

The midfielder joined the Spanish side from Tottenham Hotspurs for a reported fee of £30 million, signing a 5 year contract back in 2012. He has been a mainstay in the midfield since joining them, winning 4 Champions League, 1 La Liga title, 1 Spanish Cup and 2 Spanish Super Cup along with other numerous accolades.

The 32 year old enjoyed the best season of his life last term as helped the club to win their third consecutive Champions League trophy under former manager Zinedine Zidane after beating Liverpool back in May.

He featured 11 times as La Liga giants continued their dominance of the Champions League, scoring once and adding a single assist. But it was his conviction in possession and ability to turn defence into attack with just one pass that made him so vital to Los Blancos’ success.

The player also helped his nation Croatia to reach the finals in this year’s World Cup but lost against France in the final match of the tournament. He claimed the Golden Ball at the World Cup, won the most votes from coaches and journalists to seal the award.

He also took the prize for the most impressive midfielder in the Champions League last season.
