The Toffees have Lukaku’s mother to thank for his transfer

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has admitted that his mother convinced him to move to Goodison Park, and leave behind Chelsea.

The Belgium international has 18 goals to his name so far this season, making him the club’s top scorer and joint top, with 15, in the Premier League – alongside Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy. And the 22-year-old may not have achieved this if it wasn’t for his mother.

Having struggled to hold down a regular place in the Chelsea starting XI, Lukaku has admitted that his mother convinced him to stop ignoring Everton boss Roberto Martinez’s calls and discuss a move to Merseyside.

“He [Martinez] actually called me three times and I didn’t pick up on the first two, so I’m glad I answered eventually,” Lukaku revealed.

“I discussed it with him, I spoke to Chelsea, I spoke to my mother, and eventually she said: ‘Go to Everton.’ I haven’t regretted it.”

Complete striker

If it wasn’t for the Belgian’s mother, Lukaku may well have had a different story to tell right now and Everton would not have managed to prize one of football’s most wanted striker’s to Goodison Park.

Lukaku is certainly benefitting from being the first name on the team sheet at Everton, as is full of confidence going into Wednesday evening’s Capital One Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City – a competition in which he has scored three times this season.

“From the first game this season, against Watford, I’ve been getting close to being the complete striker. I have the mentality, and I am very… constant.” Lukaku added.

“Whoever we play against, I know what to do. If they don’t leave space behind, I’ll be playing with my back to goal. I know I’ll find a way to score. I just want more, because it feels great.”
