Man United missed out on £12m Robben signing

It has been revealed by Rio Ferdinand that Manchester United could have signed Arjen Robben for just £12m back in 2004. Boss Sir Alex Ferguson made a bid for the PSV Eindhoven winger which was worth just £5m, but it was rejected by the Dutch club as they wanted £12m.

Chelsea then went and matched the £12m valuation, signed for the Blues and he went on to terrorise Prem defences as he helped the club win two Prem titles before leaving for Real Madrid in 2007. Writing for Mail On Sunday, Ferdinand revealed this information as he wrote:

“He should have been a United player. He would have fitted in. He had a brilliant breakthrough season with PSV in 2002/03, a campaign in which he turned 19, and Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to sign him. United made a bid of something around £5m, and Sir Alex was always determined he wouldn’t over-pay for any player.

“When that was rejected, Chelsea paid something like £12m.”

Reports have surfaced that new Red Devils boss Louis Van Gaal wants to sign Robben this summer and Bayern would want about £40m for the 30-year old. What a huge amount it is, compared to what United could have signed him for 12 years ago.
