Man United to offer Phil Jones new contract

Phil Jones is set to be offered a new and improved contract at Man United. The 22-year old has two-years remaining on his current deal.

But boss Louis an Gaal wants to increase his contract to a five-year deal and he will also up the defender’s wages from ÂŁ50,000 to ÂŁ75,000 a week. It isn’t expected that United will announce this deal anytime soon but the offer is on the table for now, and it is thought that there won’t be any disagreements over it.

Gary Neville meanwhile has called on his former team-mate to help lead the Red Devils, with Nemanja Vidic, Rio ferdinand and Patrice Evra now gone. He said:

“Big personalities like Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have gone, and new leaders and characters need to emerge in the dressing room. This is now the opportunity for Phil Jones, David De Gea, Juan Mata, Ander Herrera – players who’ve been signed – to become leaders and develop the mentality that they want to take over the mantle.

“That’s particularly true for the ones who have been there for a period of time. Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Jonny Evans are the five obvious players who have won many honours between them, now they need to step up.”
