Chelsea are also firmly set on signing the defender

Manchester United are working on a deal to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, according to reports in France.

The two clubs currently do not have a very good working relationship, having blamed each other over the collapse of David de Gea‘s transfer to the Spanish capital.

United chief executive Ed Woodward also failed to prize Sergio Ramos from the Bernabeu, with the defender subsequently signing a new lucrative five year contract.

However the Red Devils will hope they can strike a deal for Varane, with French publication Le10 sport reporting that a deal is in the pipeline.

Real president Florentino Perez has said he received enquiries from United this summer

But they will face stiff competition from current Premier League champions Chelsea, who have been after the centre back for a while.

Varane signed with Madrid when current Blues boss Jose Mourinho was in charge, and the player has spoken glowingly of the Portuguese’s influence on his career so far.

For now though the France international seems content on staying in La Liga, and cementing his place in the national side for Euro 2016 on home soil.

Interestingly both Madrid and United were interested in signing the then 18 year old protégé Varane from Ligue 1 side Lens.

He chose Real, and signed a six year contract back in 2011.
