Manchester City have agreed on an £11.3m fee to send academy product, Rabbi Matondo to FC Schalke.

The teenager becomes the Citizens’ second player after Brahim Diaz to quit the Etihad Stadium this season, Jadon Sancho being sold off to Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for €8m.

BVB had expressed interest in Matondo as well but this time Schalke won the battle for the promising youngster.

The 18-year-old spent his early days with Cardiff City but later signed with City in 2016 for a £500,000 transfer fee. He mostly operates from the wing position and has 8 caps to his name for the Welsh U21 side.

In November 2018, Matonda made his debut for the Wales senior team against Albania, coming on as a substitute for Sam Vokes in a 1-0 loss. He was in the final 18 months of his contract with City, which might have provoked the board to agree to the sale.

Plenty of young athletes such as Matondo who relatively has very low chances of making it into the senior sides of their parent clubs are finding success in the Bundesliga. Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen turned into a star defensive figure after playing two seasons with Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Now Sancho is quickly becoming a household name in Germany due to his exploits for Dortmund. Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson is impressing as well for TSG Hoffenheim.

Hopefully, Matono can find success in the FC Schalke ranks, which also employs top prospects like Breel Embolo, Benajmin Goller and Suat Serder.
