Citizens win 6-0 against relegated Queens Park Rangers

Manchester City eased to three points this afternoon as they thumped Queens Park Rangers 6-0 at the Etihad Stadium thanks to a Sergio Aguero hat-trick.

The Citizens went into the game aiming for a win to keep their hopes of a second-placed finish alive, whilst the visitors arrived knowing that anything other than a win would relegate them to the Championship.

QPR saw Burnley confirm their relegation yesterday despite their 1-0 win over Hull City, and unless they could defy the odds in Manchester today, they were set to join them back in the Championship after just one year in the top-flight.

However, things started badly and only got worse for the visitors as their relegation was confirmed in an embarrassing fashion.

The game was just four minutes old when Aguero powered his way past the QPR defence before chipping the ball over Robert Green to make it 1-0.

Things then got worse for the visitors after an Aleksandar Kolarov free-kick doubled the hosts advantage and gave them a comfortable 2-0 lead going into half-time.

It would have had to take something special for The R‘s to survive now, but in truth, it was only the start of the punishment from a rampant Manchester City side.

Just five minutes into the second-half Aguero netted his second and City’s third after sloppy defensive play, before the Argentine netted his hat-trick after scoring from the penalty spot.

Aguero then turned provider as he set up James Milner, and it was David Silva who finished the romp in the 87th minute with a cool finish after rounding Green.

The win keeps City second and three points above Arsenal, but have played two games more, whilst the defeat confirms QPR’s relegation to the Championship.

After the game, both sides spoke to the media.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini tells Sky Sports: “I think for Sergio Aguero it is really important to score. He wants to be the top scorer this season but I think it’s also the way he is playing. He is working a lot more during the game, moving more and receiving more balls.

“David Silva is always a talent that decides the important passes in the 90 minutes.”

Manchester City midfielder James Milner: “We haven’t been good enough for long spells of the season and we have come up short. But I’m sure we will be back. The quality is there and the hunger is there. There will be new faces in the summer, I’m sure we will be back.”

Queens Park Rangers manager Chris Ramsey speaking to Sky Sports: “We came here with a lot of hope, shot ourselves in the foot and gave away three set-pieces which they scored from. On the day we didn’t really turn up and they are a very good team. The boys will be very disappointed in the way they performed. We are really feel sorry for the travelling fans.

“As you can imagine the dressing room is very, very quiet. I don’t think it’s a time for post mortems, our fate is what it is. The club is in a rebuilding phase now and would have been anyway regardless of today. There are lots of people at the club who will be extremely disappointed in the way we conducted ourselves today.”

“A lot of players today were playing with injuries that in most situations they wouldn’t have played with.

“At the moment I’m very disappointed and gutted, more about the performance because that isn’t really us. From my personal point of view I’d like to thank the owners and the fans for backing us like they have.”
