Manchester United are being supported by Adidas to fund a bumper offer for Lionel Messi.

Marketing Deportivo say that the German sportswear brand, who pay £75million per-season to sponsor the Red Devils, are worried about the team’s displays on the field and are concerned that United’s lack of success could tarnish their own brand.

Adidas have now taken matters into their own hands and are helping United to lure the Argentina international away from the Nou Camp, having sponsored the forward for over 13 years.

However, the 29-year-old’s current contract with the Spanish giants only expires in 2018, with his buyout clause set at £215m.

United and Adidas are preparing to pay Messi €100m (£85m) to not extend his current deal with Barcelona, the club he has been at since being 13 years of age.

With the help of Adidas, the Red Devils will be able to offer the Argentine a contract worth £42m.

Jose Mourinho’s side face tough competition though as the report also claims that rivals Manchester City are willing to put a €230m (£195.6m) bid together to sign Messi.
