Manchester United have agreed a deal in principle with Benfica for defender Victor Lindelof, with a fee believed to be in the region of £42million.

The 22-year-old has been closely monitored for the past two seasons by United and Jose Mourinho is a keen admirer of the centre-half.

Despite Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones impressing during an injury crisis for United’s defence, Mourinho thinks Lindelof’s solid and reliable defending is most suited to his side and the Premier League.

Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira jetted into Manchester yesterday to negotiate further with the Red Devils and the two parties finalised a £42m price for the Sweden international, according to Portuguese news outlet Record.

The report states that the move is all but complete and that Lindelof will travel to the Theatre of Dreams in January to train alongside his new teammates.

Portuguese gaffer Mourinho spent a staggering £150m during his first summer at the club, including a world record £89m on French midfielder Paul Pogba.

Lindelof would become the third most expensive signing in United’s history, with the £42m price-tag being behind Pogba and Angel Di Maria.

Rio Ferdinand became the club’s most expensive defender back in 2002 when he joined from Leeds United for £29.1m but Lindelof will smash the record if the transfer goes through.
