New York Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry has been speaking about the rivalry between his former-side Arsenal and English champions Manchester United, and he has revealed that despite the fierce rivalry, there was always a mutual respect between the two teams.

The Gunners and The Red Devils were known as the two main title contenders back in the late-90s and early 00s and this lead them to having one of the best footballing rivalries in world football, especially with Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira playing in the middle of the park.

Whenever the two played each other, it was fierce and more often than not, things got a little bit feisty, but talking in a new documentary, Henry has revealed that the two sides always respected each other, despite them going head-to-head for glory.

“It was beyond the title with Arsenal and Man United,” Henry said.

“It was [all about] beating Man United. And I’m sure it was for them it was about beating us and then let’s see about the title after.

“As players we always tried to explain to people that there was a big respect. Every Arsenal player had a lot of respect for Man United and I’m sure it was the same in the other camp.

“Every time the press was saying that Arsène said something about Ferguson and Ferguson said something about Arsène. And they were making it the big game, which it was at the time because we were competing every time to win the league.

“I would say it was like a rivalry, a big one but with a lot of respect.”
