Manchester United and Liverpool must pay £33m for Sevilla’s Ivan Rakitic

The Croatian midfielder has openly admitted that he is growing frustrated at Sevilla with lack of silverware and success, despite the La Liga outfit trying to silence interest from the Premier League.

Rakitic only has a year and a half left on his current contract and Sevilla could be forced to sell their key asset as a last chance to claim big money, just as they managed with Alvaro Negredo, Jesus Navas and Geoffrey Kondogbia in the summer.

But club president Jose Castro is confident of keeping the 25-year-old at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

“Ivan Rakitic has a year and a half of his contract remaining. I have absolutely no doubts that we’re going to reach an agreement with him,” Castro said speaking at a Sevilla Supporters’ Club meeting.

“If anyone else is in a rush to have Rakitic, his clause is €40m (£33m) and we’ll leave it at that.”

Rakitic was named captain by head coach Unai Emery at the start of the season and the Croatia international has rewarded his boss by scoring seven goals and assisting five in the opening half of the season.

Both David Moyes and Brendan Rodgers have suggested that they will be active in the upcoming transfer window, but won’t be making many more additions if they are to spend only £10m less for Rakitic than Arsenal did for Mesut Ozil.
