The defender is likely to agree a new deal at Barcelona

Manchester United are looking to bolster their squad this summer in order to challenge for the title next season. Their priority is adding defensive reinforcements as Jose Mourinho claimed earlier that he will only sign defenders.

Despite having the most clean sheets and the second best defensive record in the Premier League this season, Mourinho is not happy as had to rely on auxiliary full-backs  and failed to settle on a consistent central defensive axis due to injuries.

The Portuguese manager wants to sign Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti and is a big admirer of him. He has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world over the past few seasons with La Liga giants.

Umtiti has a €60 million release clause in his contract and many top European clubs including United are ready to pay the amount. Barcelona are aware of this and have offered the Frenchman a new contract to fend off interest. But he wants a raise in his current wages to stay in Spain and the club does not want to pay him such high wages.

The Red Devils thought they could land the 24 years old because of his contract situation and is even ready to pay €10 million a year to lure him to England according to reports.

But Manchester United have dropped their interest in centre-back Samuel Umtiti, according to Marca.

They indicate the France international will probably end up staying with Barcelona  and sign a new €5 million a year contract. He had been hoping for a far bigger increase on his current €2 million wages but Club’s salary cap won’t allow it.
