Club will have to pay him off to let him leave this summer

Manchester United are considering selling Wayne Rooney, but will have to pay him off the rest of his contract to let him leave this summer.

The United captain was dropped from Jose Mourinho’s starting lineup prior to the international break, and then was also relegated to the subs bench in Gareth Southgate’s second England game in charge in Slovenia on Tuesday night.

But should United opt to part company with Rooney at the end of this summer, it could end up costing them a huge amount of cash.

It’s thought that it will cost the club ÂŁ26m, as they will have to pay him the remainder of his wages left on his contract. He’s already attracted the attention of the MLS clubs and a move could very much be possible.

The Chinese Super League is another option for the striker.

The Chinese FA’s marketing director Li Jiuquan said last week: “Wayne [Rooney] is huge star in China.

“Even my young son knows all about Rooney and I have taken a picture of his shirt.

“If Rooney played in the Chinese Super League it would attract huge attention, not only inside China but on television worldwide, and give the CSL huge exposure globally.”

Rooney, who has made 375 Premier League appearances to date, will be hoping to regain his starting spot against Liverpool on Monday (8pm).
