Manchester United eye record deal

Manchester United are to lodge a £47m bid for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels when the transfer window opens in January, reports The Guardian.

United chief executive Ed Woodward claimed this week that the club were not in the market for short term fixes, and would only be active in January if any of their summer targets became available.

Early communications with Borussia Dortmund about the potential transfer weren’t productive, with the German club indicating they did not want to sell. Since then, down in part to United’s persistence, Dortmund have softened on their stance and may be tempted to sell if the reported offer does materialise.

Hummels has been a vital part of Dortmund’s successful recent seasons, and with two years on his contract left, they may well decide to sell him rather than see him run down his contract and join Bayern Munich on a free, as happened with Robert Lewandowski recently.
