Former Manchester United defender Alexander Buttner has fired a dig at Steven Gerrard’s failure to win the Premier League title while at Liverpool.

The left-back was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer of 2012 and won the league title in his first season at the Theatre of Dreams.

However, the 27-year-old was mainly used as a sporadic player at Old Trafford, playing just 28 games for the English giants before joining Dynamo Moscow.

Buttner has now returned to Eredivisie outfit Vitesse and the Dutchman insists his time with the Red Devils was useful and a learning curve.

“My adventure with Manchester United was not a failure,” Buttner told Algemeen Dagblad.

“Who can say that they have won the Premier League title? I can say that.

“Even Steven Gerrard hasn’t managed it.

“I played more games for United than I ever dreamed of.

“I’ve become a much better football player, I played in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Bayern Munich and Arjen Robben.”
