Manchester United are hoping to beat off competition from AC Milan and Real Madrid for midfielder Thiago Motta, who has his heart set on a move away from the French capital.

Louis Van Gaal’s side have been short in the central midfield area this season, with striker Wayne Rooney having to drop back at times to fill the central birth.

Having joined Paris Saint Germain in 2012 from Serie A side Internazionale, Motta is now apparently keen to try ventures new which has alerted several clubs across Europe.

Real Madrid’s interest in the 32 year-old has been sparked as defensive midfielder Sami Khedira appears to be no closer to agreeing a new deal to stay in Madrid, so Carlo Ancelotti could make a move for Motta incase the German was to leave.

Van Gaal will hope that the attraction of the Premier League and likely first-team football will sway Motta towards Old Trafford ahead of their European rivals.
