Manchester United are in talks with goalkeeper David De Gea over a new contract worth £140,000 per week.

The arrival of free agent Victor Valdes, who had been training with the club, had cast doubt over the future at Old Trafford of De Gea.

Real Madrid have been keeping tabs on the Spanish stopper, who United signed from their city rivals Atletico.

But United manager Louis Van Gaal has stated that Valdes is at the club as back-up to De Gea.

Van Gaal said: “He joins the club as the number two goalkeeper and is a great addition to the first team.”

One potential sticking point in any De Gea is that the keeper wants reassurances that the club can start challenging for trophies again. And he also wants the club to continue to bring star players in.

Real Madrid are targeting De Gea as a replacement for long-serving stalwart Iker Casillas.

After a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, De Gea has firmly established himself as one of Europe’s best keepers this season, with some stunning performances.

United fans may wonder, with the arrival of Valdes and the new contract offer to De Gea, what the future holds for Anders Lindegaard.
