Manchester United set to open talks with Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar in January

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal wants to bring in a new central defender to Old Trafford this January, with his current backline being continously plagued with poor form and injuries.

The latest bad news coming from Marco Rojo’s injury from the Manchester derby clash on Sunday, the Argentine being diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder and set to miss around three months of football.

Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans have all been under par this season, which has left all of them on the sidelines for the majority of fixtures.

The situation has left Van Gaal with no option but to go on the lokout for a new centre-half, Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar being the latest to be reported as currently targeted by the Dutch manager.

Vlaar performed brilliantly under Van Gaal for his national team Holland in the recent World Cup in Brazil, which left him in high demand throughout some of Europe’s top clubs.

And with the 29-year-old’s contract expiring at the end of the season, Van Gaal believes he can persuade Paul Lambert into selling the Dutch defender without risking losing him on a free transfer at the end of this campaign; beating several other interested clubs to his signature in the process.
