The shot-stopper is in high demand

According to the Mirror, Manchester United are prepared to hijack Chelsea’s bid for Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international is a target for the Blues’ boss Jose Mourinho since Petr Cech’s departure from Stamford Bridge to Arsenal.

Mourinho sees Begovic as an adequate replacement for Cech and believes he would bring enough quality competition for number one Thibaut Courtois.

A spanner could be thrown in the works

However, United boss Louis van Gaal is planning to beat Chelsea to Begovic’s signature.

Chelsea reportedly had a ÂŁ6 million bid for Begovic turned down by the Potters last week; and the Dutchman van Gaal believes he can go one better than his former assistant Mourinho.

The Red Devils are monitoring the situation of the ex-Portsmouth man just in case David De Gea does leave Old trafford for Real Madrid in this summer summer transfer window.

Which means United will need back up for the 33-year old Victor Valdes, as van Gaal doesn’t believe Anders Lindegaard has the sufficient attributes to do so.

The two Premier League giants will battle it out for the goalkeeper, as they both have the pull factor of Champions League football during the 2015/16 campaign.
