MANCHESTER UNITED VS LIVERPOOL REACTION

A Javier Hernandez goal was enough for Manchester United in tonight’s clash with Liverpool in the Capital One Cup and below you can read some reaction from both managers and some of the players.

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans:

“I hope the fans enjoyed the game. We certainly did. It was a hard game. They were playing expansive football. I bet it was entertaining to watch. Thankfully we got the goal after half time and we could hold on.

“They put out a strong team, with most of their players playing at the weekend. But this was my first start of the season. We were getting a bit tired at the end.

“We want to win it (the cup). It was the first trophy I won and it was a great feeling. So it’s a competition we take seriously and we’d be proud to win it.”

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling:

“It was a massive turnaround (from the weekend), especially with players who haven’t played a lot of games this season. The noise from the fans was amazing.

“There was a lot of doubt after the weekend so we had to go out and get a performance and we did.

“It felt like it was end to end for pretty much 90 minutes. A real cup tie.”

Manchester United manager David Moyes:

“The movement is great for the goal, that’s what Chicharito is all about. He finds space so well. Both games against Liverpool have been tight and have been settled by a goal from a set-piece.”

“We had to try and come out and show something a bit better than we had done (against Liverpool and City). We had to bounce back and I thought it was a good result tonight. It’s given me a chance to see some players I haven’t seen much and it’s given me food for thought.

“Ryan Giggs was great tonight, his play was great, he’s some player he really is.

“You really only want home draws, Norwich are a good side. We’ll give them the respect they deserve.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers:

“It was a very close game – decided on a corner at the beginning of the half that we’re disappointed with. It just drops into the six-yard box and it’s very disappointing to say the least.

“The players played really well. They had a few days to adapt to a new system. They created some opportunities but couldn’t make the final pass count and didn’t work the keeper enough.

“I can have no complaints. One lapse of concentration has cost us.

“I thought Luis Suarez was excellent. You could tell he’d been out for a long time as he tired at the end. But he’s obviously a threat. I think adrenaline gets you over the line in the first game. But he’s a fighter. He’s so determined and will get ready for the weekend.”
