The Red Devils are believed to be keen on the Everton defender

Louis Van Gaal is prepared to do battle with Jose Mourinho to sign John Stones, according to the Daily Mail.

The Dutchman has openly admitted they need to strengthen in the defensive department and Stones would seem to fit the bill.

The 21-year-old has become an integral part of the Toffees defence this season, forming a key partnership with Phil Jagielka and, has recently broke into the England senior team.

Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, is believed to have handed Van Gaal £150m with which to transform the side this summer.

Stones started off at Barnsley before moving to the Goodison Park club for a fee believed to be in the region of ÂŁ3million, back in January 2013.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was reported to be the favourite for the defender’s signature – the Portugese coach is searching for John Terry’s long-term successor.

The next Desailly

Mourinho does have the young Frenchman Kurt Zouma, who BBC pundit Danny Murphy compared to former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly.

The 20-year-old has made 15 appearances for the Stamford Bridge outfit this season and could well be the solution once Terry has left, according to Murphy.
