Manchester United wants to sign Dries Mertens

He is one of the best players in Serie A right now

Manchester United are expected to bolster their side this summer after falling behind their rivals Manchester City in the Premier League this season. They are expected to overhaul their defense as Jose Mourinho is not happy with his backline.

But the Premier League giants could also look for attacking options as future of Anthony Martial and Juan Mata are uncertain and Mourinho wants someone to provide competition to club’s first choice striker Romelu Lukaku.

Manchester United are hoping to sign Napoli star Dries Mertens in the summer, according to The Sun.

Mertens joined Napoli from PSV Eindhoven in 2013 and has been a mainstay in the team. But upped his game midway through the previous campaign, when club manager Maurizio Sarri jiggled his starting line-up and put the 30 year old up front. He scored 28 goals and was behind Edin Dzeko only in Serie A.

The Belgian International has been in great form this season also, scoring 17 goals and assisting 6 in Serie A and has established himself as on of the best players in the League. He just have a release clause of £25 million for sides outside of Italy.

As well as his incredibly affordable fee, Mourinho is attracted by his versatility and has already contacted the Serie A giants to enquire over his availability.

Juventus is likely beat Napoli in the race for Serie A title this season, the club could lose also their manager Sarri who is linked with a move to Chelsea. Mertens could be tempted to move to England if an offer comes for him.

According to reports, The Red Devils could also involve Marouane Fellaini in the deal as he is expected to leave the club this summer.
