Manuel Pellegrini left confused about rules

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini was left a bit confused at full-time last night, as he appeared to misunderstand the situation his team was in whilst playing German giants Bayern Munich.

After going 2-0 down early on, it appeared that Pep Guardiola’s side would walk to victory, but that wasn’t the case as three goals from David Silva, Aleksandar Kolarov and James Milner turned the game on it’s head and made it 3-2 to the English side.

Top-spot was up for grabs for City and co., and they only needed one more goal to take number-one spot off of Munich, but Pellegrini didn’t decide to go all out for that one goal as he decided to keep top scorer, Sergio Aguero on the bench.

After the game, the manager admitted getting top-spot was important, but qualifying is also key.

“I was tempted if we scored the fourth goal.”

The Chilean added: “It was important to be first in the group but not the most important.

“It was difficult to score two goals.”

So the City manager was left believing that his side had to win by three-clear goals, when in fact a 4-2 victory would have secured them top-spot.

How costly could that mistake be? We will find out when the knockout stage is drawn next year!
