Southampton Football Club have made a formal complaint to the Premier League regarding referee Mark Clattenburg after midfielder Adam Lallana accused the official of abusing him during their defeat to Everton.

The Saints lost 2-1 at Goodison Park on Saturday but were denied a clear penalty when Antolin Alcaraz handled in the box.

After the appeal was turned down, Saints captain Lallana ran toward Clattenburg to talk to him and was eventually shown a yellow card for his protests, and after the game, Lallana told the club that he was abused and insulted by the matchday official.

This isn’t the first time Clattenburg has been in the middle of controversy as he was involved in a racial case involving Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel, but all accusations were later dismissed.

Southampton have asked the Premier League to withdraw the official from any league encounters until the problem is resolved.

However, he will be the official for Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup on Satuday.
