Chelsea offered a more lucrative deal than Manchester United for former AS Monaco striker Anthony Martial, according to reports in France.

French publication CanalPlus claim Chelsea were ‘desperate’ to sign the rapid forward in the summer transfer window but failed, with Martial joining their title rivals Manchester United.

United spent £36million on the 19-year-old on deadline day, a deal seen as a risk initially by many pundits of the game.

The France international has impressed in his time so far at Old Trafford, scoring four goals in his first seven appearances for the Red Devils.

It has recently been revealed that he rejected current Premier League champions Chelsea so he could move to the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.

Martial snubbed the Blues’ offer because he dreamed of playing for a club like United.

Chelsea Showed Interest

On social media, CanalPlus posted: “According to our information, Chelsea had proposed more money than Manchester United for Anthony Martial but the player dreamed of the Red Devils.”

The striker has revealed why he joined United instead of Chelsea, he said: “Why [did] I chose Manchester United? Because, for me, they are among the five best clubs in the world.

“I also really wanted to continue to play in the Champions League. This is what made my decision.

“And I know Van Gaal wanted me. That’s what motivated me to take a decision.

“It was very important to show the coach that he could trust me.” he added.
