Martin Keown has slammed Theo Walcott over his reluctance to sign a new contract, saying that he still isn’t “first choice.”
Arséne Wenger revealed the difficulties surrounding Walcott’s previous extension in 2013 and the iconic centre-back has warned Walcott to be careful in the next round of negotiations.
“He hasn’t really cemented himself yet, and I think it’s ten years he’s been at the football club. You couldn’t really call him first choice.”
In fact, Walcott is Arsenal’s longest serving player having been at the club for nine years.
Keown believes that Wenger has played the situation perfectly thus far. “He’s laying down the message to the player – ‘don’t take liberties, we’ll pay you a fair amount but we won’t go over the top.’”
