BBC pundit reckons striker should leave Manchester United

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has urged Robin Van Persie to quit Manchester United over the Summer in order to prevent himself from becoming an ’embarrassment’.

The 31-year-old has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons and despite Louis Van Gaal taking over the reigns this Summer at Old Trafford, the Dutchman has failed to rectify his goalscoring days.

Injury Problems

Van Persie was superb in his debut season for United, helping them clinch their 20th league title, but after Sir Alex Ferguson left, the veteran started to struggle.

Injuries plagued his year under David Moyes and more injuries this season has restricted him to just 10 goals under his countryman.

The Dutchman currently has one-year left on his contract at Old Trafford and it’s believed that officials at the club won’t offer him a new deal due to his excessive wage demands.

Van Persie currently earns ÂŁ250k-a-week, making him the club’s highest earner alongside Wayne Rooney, and Keown believes it’s time for him to leave the club.

Keown Urges RVP To Quit

Writing in his Daily Mail column, Keown stated that Van Persie is past his peak now and he will continue to struggle unless he moves elsewhere.

He told the Daily Mail: “Three years ago Robin van Persie was deciding matches between Manchester United and Arsenal.

“His lethal instincts and sublime goals made the difference for both teams.

“This year we all expected him to flourish under Louis van Gaal. The pair had worked together for Holland and it seemed a natural fit.

“Instead, Wayne Rooney was made captain and Van Persie has disappeared into the shadows.

“He has almost become an embarrassment for Van Gaal; a problem the meticulous manager has not been able to solve.”

Reported Interest

Serie A sides are reportedly interest in Van Persie, as are Turkish side Galatasaray.
