Defender backs club to win trophies this season

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has revealed why he decided to sign a new contract at Anfield – He believes the club can win trophies this season.

The Slovakian centre-back signed a three-year contract in Merseyside, ending all speculation surrounding his long-term future, with Serie A side Inter Milan keen on signing him.

Skrtel‘s future was in the air after he initially rejected a contract extension from the Liverpool board after they offered him a pay-as-you-play deal.

The 30-year-old was left insulted by the offer and he quickly turned it down, however, he eventually signed a new deal after the club’s renegotiated.

Skrtel Eyes Silverware

“That’s what I believe you know,” Skrtel said when asked if he think The Reds can challenge for trophies in the 2015/2016 campaign.

“We are working very hard every day to be fit and ready for the season and then the players will do the best we can and try and finish as high as we can.

“The thing is when you play for a club like Liverpool it’s not always just about the money it’s about the fans, the people working for the club and everything about Liverpool.”

Srktel has been at Liverpool since 2008, after leaving Russian side Zenit St Petersburg, and if he sees out his three-year deal at Anfield, he will be due a testimonial at the club for spending over a decade there.

When asked about his commitment to Liverpool, Skrtel admitted he never thought about leaving the club because he and his family are happy in Merseyside.

Defender Reiterates Desire to Stay

“I have been going somewhere every single transfer window but I can say I am happy because I am staying at Liverpool and they were always my first choice,” he added.

“They changed the contract, obviously the talks were a little longer than they usually are but at the end of the day we agreed and that is the most important thing.

“Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world in my eyes and I was always dreaming about playing in England and for a big club like Liverpool and my dream came true.

“I have been here almost eight years in the city and we are used to it now. My son was born in Liverpool and that was one of the main reasons I wanted to stay.

“Obviously there was talk about that [Inter Milan], but the priority for me was always to stay at Liverpool and sign a new contract here.

“Inter Milan are a big club but to my mind Liverpool are bigger.”
