Martinez says poor defending cost Belgium against Switzerland

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez said that bad defending was the reason why his team lost against Switzerland in their Nations League decider at Lucerne. Belgium only needed a draw to progress to the Nations League Finals and took a 2-0 lead thanks to a brace from Thorgan Hazard.

However, Switzerland fought back strongly and a hat-trick from Haris Seferovic and goals from Nico Elvedi and Ricardo Rodriguez saw Switzerland winning 5-2. The win was Switzerland’s first over Belgium in 35 years. It was also their largest win over Belgium since their 4-0 drubbing in 1947.

Following the match, Roberto Martinez says that his team weren’t arrogant. When asked if arrogance cost Belgium the match, he replied, “Arrogance? No, we were surprised on counter-attacks, we forgot to defend well. It’s very difficult to give an explanation. We started well, then at a certain point, Switzerland had nothing to lose.

We gave them opportunities to come back in the game. Hence, we must come out stronger, try to understand what we have done wrong. It is all the more painful that we had started very well.”

The defeat put an end to Belgium’s Nations League campaign and Switzerland advanced to the Nations League Finals.
