Chelsea were defeated 0-1 by Leicester City at Stamford Bridge last weekend and Maurizio Sarri explained the cause of the loss to be a mental issue.

The Italian boss is confident of the prime physical conditions of his players, all thanks to his supreme rotational system since taking charge of the Blues. When he was asked about the energy levels of his players, Sarri said, “The physical performance in the match against Bournemouth was one of the best this season for quantity, one of the best in quality, for number of accelerations, for high-speed [sprints].”

“I think it’s impossible to change the physical condition in two minutes. We were on the pitch very well for 55 minutes and then after two minutes, after the goal, we were in trouble. I think there is another reason, not the physical condition.”

Chelsea pulled off a magnificent 2-0 win over the English champions, Manchester City earlier in the month but the result came after a 2-1 loss to Wolves at the Molineux. Their last home loss has allowed Arsenal to catch up to them in the league standings but Blues still maintain their spot in the top four based on a better goal difference.

Sarri further added, “I think we played very well for 55 minutes, we played very good football. After the goal, the reaction was, for me, a strange reaction, not in the right direction, not as a team but as 11 different players and so it was very strange.”

When the coach was questioned about hiring a sports psychologist Sarri said, “No [we’re not using a sports psychologist], not at the moment, because it’s not easy. I had a sports psychologist 15 years ago. In Italy, it was really very difficult because the clubs were not ready in that moment, but I think they are not ready also in this moment. [That was] my experience in Italy. I don’t know [what it’s like] here. We can talk about this [with the club]. Why not?”
