With chances not falling very often to eithger side, it seemed on the cards that it was going to be a goal-less draw, but a 92nd minute free kick whipped in by Frank Lampard was turned in by the skipper John Terry. This proved to be the winner and a vital 3 points saw the West London side keep their place at the top of the table as Arsenal and Manchester City also won.

The win is also vital to Jose Mourinho’s side as they travel to Turkey mid-week for a Champions League clash with Galatasaray.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s reaction: “We have our limitations, that’s obvious. It was never going to be one of those days where we score three or four goals.

I feel a bit sorry for Everton, because a point would have been fair for a good performance. They played well, they controlled parts of the game and they were very comfortable on the ball. They don’t create many chances but their quality in possession is equal to anyone else in the Premier League.

We were strong at the end, though. In those added five minutes, only one team was dominant.”

Everton boss Roberto Martinez’s reaction: “They are very good at what they do, but I couldn’t see them scoring a goal from open play.

We were magnificent in the first half, it was a great performance generally, but the scoreline at the end is what matters. We need to make sure that when we play well we end up with the points we deserve,”
